The Pfeffer Derby

What is the Pfeffer Derby?

The Pfeffer Derby is an inclusive, high-energy community pine car racing event created by and for individuals with disabilities. Each spring, teams from local day programs and high school developmental education classrooms come together to race handmade wooden cars, designed and decorated to match the year's theme. The event is completely free to all participants, thanks to the generosity of local sponsors.

Participants receive custom team t-shirts, solid metal participation medals, and car kits to build one car for speed—and another for style. Winners take home trophies and themed prize baskets, and everyone leaves with memories that last a lifetime.

How It Started

The Pfeffer Derby is named in honour of Ben Pfeffer, a beloved member of Our Place Respite. Ben lived with cerebral palsy and used a wheelchair, but what defined him most was his sharp wit, love of cars, and boundless community spirit.

One day, Ben suggested we host a demolition derby. Since that wasn’t possible, we pitched the idea of a pine car race instead—and he was all in. After a small first race in our parking lot, Ben and our team decided to grow the event into something bigger: a community-wide derby inviting local day programs and high school classrooms.

Our first official Pfeffer Derby was held at Pinafore Park, with over 100 people in attendance. Ben and his father even built a custom track for the occasion. From there, the event took off—with the Elgin County Railway Museum stepping in as host for the following three years. They built us an official race track, and the venue became a magical backdrop with its historic trains.

Ben's Vision

The Pfeffer Derby was Ben’s idea, and it carries his heart. His dream was simple but powerful: bring the disability community together, remove every financial barrier, and create a day filled with pride, laughter, and friendly competition.

He made it clear that the Derby was not a fundraiser—it was about people. Ben personally helped plan each event and was the final decision-maker on every detail. After his sudden passing in April 2024, we committed to keeping his vision alive. Now, every Pfeffer Derby opens with a memorial run featuring a pine car replica of his wheelchair-accessible van. His family remains deeply involved, and Ben’s voice continues to guide the event.

Why the Pfeffer Derby?

Celebrating Passion and Legacy

Ben’s passion for racing and his vision for the Pfeffer Derby continue to drive the event. Ben created, co-organized, and was the deciding voice on everything. He was always very clear that this was not to be a fundraiser for OPR, but instead, an event that brought community together. Even though he’s no longer physically with us, his spirit and heart are clearly at the core of this tradition, which is a beautiful way to honor his memory.

Teamwork and Pride

Teams show off their team pride when they design their names, logos, and cars together, building friendships and confidence. Whether it’s through racing strategy or creative decoration, teamwork is at the heart of it all.

Free for Participants

Offering the event completely free of charge, from car kits and team t-shirts to a catered lunch, prizes and trophies- is a wonderful way to ensure that everyone who wants to participate can, regardless of financial circumstances. The focus is on the experience and the joy of being part of something special.

Building Community Spirit

The event offers much more than just a race; it’s a day full of laughter, sportsmanship, and camaraderie. The atmosphere—with everyone coming together to share in the fun—highlights how important this event is for building lasting connections within the community.

Support from Sponsors
and Donors

The role of sponsors and donors in making the event possible is crucial, and we are grateful to have a community that offers such a strong network of support. This kind of generosity allows us to keep the event free and accessible, which is so important for ensuring that it continues to serve as a positive and uplifting experience for all involved.

Friendly Competition
and Pride

The sense of achievement and pride that comes with being the Pfeffer Derby Champion for the year is no small thing! The trophies, participation medals, and the “best dressed” car prize provide tangible recognition of the hard work and creativity that goes into each team’s car, further promoting pride in their efforts.

Pure Joy

This is a day to feel proud, be loud, and celebrate sportsmanship over competition. It's not about placing first—it's about being part of something meaningful and unforgettable. The inclusive nature of the event makes it a day to remember.

The Pfeffer Derby gives individuals with disabilities a space that’s entirely for them—centered around joy, not charity. That’s why it matters.
